Movie Review

No new snowglobe info lately but no news is good news because that plus the traditional after Christmas slowdown on ebay allows me to make some much needed progress on the book.

I went to Pleasure island today and saw National Treasure: Book of Secrets. It was great. Without giving too much away, I had a minor quibble over a plot point that wasn't explained. A past president built something in order to hide landmarks leading to a treasure but it wasn't explained why he would do such a thing. Judging by the way the movie ends, the fact that Mr Cage has clearly stated he wants to do more and the money the film has grossed so far, it's a safe bet they will make a third movie. Although they will have to wait for the writer's strike to get over before they can even start on a script.

The new Goofy cartoon is a lot of fun as well and I hope they get to the point where every Disney movie has a cartoon running with it.

Fake Mary Poppins?

I recently discovered this site though an ebay auction and came across this wonderful Mary Poppins snowdome. Unfortunately, it appears to be a fake. The website will make a snowglobe to your specifications and there are no copyright notices for any of the many licensed properties on display. If it is unlicensed, it's a pity. It appears to be a very nice one.

Top Ten Update

The Cars Radiator Springs snowglobe recently traded places with the Song of the South globe in the Top Ten list. It sold for $413.50 in a buy it now listing on ebay. Click here to see the ranking of the Top Ten.

The new WDW Tinker Bell Snowglobe

Finally found a picture of that Tinker Bell snowglobe I mentioned a few days back as I was going through the closed ebay auctions. When I was searching before I was looking at current auctions and that is probably why I missed it. This makes me think that it is a new globe and not an old one.

It is about 4" tall.

Pete's Dragon gets a snowglobe

You may recall an earlier post where I discussed films that didn't have a Disney snowglobe. Earlier this week, when I was checking out this blog's visitor information, I noticed someone had found their way here by searching for a Pete's Dragon snowglobe. Now, I find that there is a Pete's Dragon snowglobe and it looks like this.
Click here to see the e-bay buy it now auction that I took the picture from. I don't know if this is new or not. The ebay listing says it is new from the Disney Store but sometimes things are listed as new but what the seller means is that it is like new referring to its condition.

Sorry

Sorry people, I looked but could not find the Tinker Bell snowglobe I mentioned yesterday. I now think, since there was just one that it may have been one they found sitting on a storage shelf somewhere. It also hasn't shown up on ebay as yet.

Disney Snowglobes arrive

I returned home tonight after work to find my new Disney Snowglobes waiting for me. The Pirates one had a broken hinge but I can easily fix that which to me is easier then going through the hassle of sending it back. The Pecos Bill one is absolutely wonderful and Disney's picture on their website does not do it justice at all. I thought this one arrived broken as well because the wind mechanism wouldn't work (you wind it by turning the globe itself) but after turning it upsde down to check for a wind knob it started working properly.

I just did my daily check of the UK Disney Store site to find they have a new arrival as well. I didn't expect to see any more Christmas globes this year figuring they would allready have been available but I guess technically it is a winter globe of Mickey and Minnie sledding.

I also saw a new arrival at Walt Disney World today. There was only 1 on the shelf of a new Tinkerbell mini but I didn't have my camera with me and there are none on ebay yet for me to borrow/steal. I'll take my camera tomorrow and with a little luck should have a picture for you.

It is a Disney Store globe so you should be able to get it at your local Disney Store in the USA. The Princesses await their one true love at this gazebo that lights up. Cinderella spins. Music is "A Dream Is A Wish Your Heart Makes" Retails for $124.50. Yikes!

Vintage Disney Snowdomes

The revelation that most of the older globes were manufactured by Marx has led me to this wonderful site http://www.andyzito.com/snowdomes/index.html You can find pictures there of lots of old snowdomes. You have to search through them to find the few Disney ones.

Vintage Song of the South

Found this on ebay while going through the closed auctions. I love it when I come across something like this because there is so little documentation on these older plastic domes. This one sold for $59.99 despite being cracked so it can no longer hold water. The seller says this was made by the marx company which is an old toy manufacturer who made the Disneykins line of plastic figurals which are highly sought after amongst collectors. There are collectors out there who collect all Marx items and that probably explains the high price. It also makes me think that the rest of these that I've found so far were very probably done by Marx.

Disney Christmas Snowglobe

I've seen this globe at Walt Disney World occasionally but have been ignoring it becasue I didn't think it was a snowglobe. BEcause of the jar shape of the globe, I thought it was just a figurine or music box with a glass cover. Turns out it is a snowglobe with glitter and music. The tree revolves inside the dome.

NEW DISNEY SNOWGLOBE

This was spotted in the Christmas shops at Walt Disney World and is probably also available at the Disneyland Resort. I don't know the exact price but was told it was somewhere between $40-$50. This particular victorian style image of Mickey and Minnie kissing under the mistletoe has been used for a few years now on ornaments and decorations so this style snowglobe may have been available in previous years but it wasn't in the Christmas shops last time I checked them.

Mary Poppins snowglobe - new record price

Hmmm. I could make my monthly mortgage payment or buy a Mary Poppins snowglobe, which will it be? The Mary Poppins globe that we like to watch on ebay has set a new record price of $1538.11. There must have been some heavy bidding in the last hour or so. I had looked at it about an hour before it ended and it was only over $600. Not to worry if you missed this one, there is another one on ebay allready and it is currently only around $200.

Shopping at the Disney Store

I made my first trip to the Disney Store as owned and operated by Children's Place today. That may sound strange, since as you know I am a collector of all things Disney but you have to understand that with me living close to Walt Disney World there just isn't much reason to make the trip to a Disney Store. Most of the "Disney Stores" that are closer are owned and operated by the theme parks and don't carry the Disney Store merchandise. The closest Disney Store owned and operated by Children's Place is in the FLorida Mall up on Orange Blossom Trail. I went expecting to see a multitude of snowglobes and prepared to buy many so I can document them for the book and then sell them on ebay (can't keep everything, not enough room or money). What I found was about 4 or 5 globes all of which I allready have documented because they are the same ones on DisneyShopping.com. In fact DisneyShopping.com had a bigger selection as I noticed at least one Disney Store globe that wasn't at the store but is still on the website.
There is one globe there that was new. I guess it is the Disney Store 2007 Christmas globe although it isn't dated. It cost $24.95 which I thought was a little high since it doesn't play music. It has Sorceror Mickey inside the globe with various Disney characters around the base.
They had some nice items but I was a bit disappointed that there wasn't more adult stuff & collectibles. They did have a lot of different snowdome cups. They sell 2 for $10. I think the cups would make an interesting collection for someone because of the variety available. They would also make excellent stocking stuffers because of their size. I probably won't be buying them but I did buy one to get my total up to $75 so I could take advantage of their free movie offer. I chose Jungle Book and spent this evening watching it and realized I don't think I've ever seen the whole movie before. I know I've watched it before but there was an awful lot I don't remember ever seeing especially towards the beginning. Perhaps I saw an edited version on tv or something. The digitally restored animation looks fantastic on my new high definition, wide screen tv and I especially enjoyed the bonus features explaining the evolution of the movie with Walt Disney's personal involvement through interviews with the people who had worked on the film. I rarely get through or even watch bonus material on dvd's but I found thiese to be very interesting.

Shopping at Walgreens

I recently purchased these globes at Walgreens. The 5 Christmas bubble globes light up different colors and cost $2 each. These are exactly the same format as the ones available at wal-mart but with different figures inside.
These others are slightly larger. They were 3 for $10 and have glass globes.

Disney Snowglobes - Coast to Coast

Here's an interesting picture from a closed ebay auction showing the differences and similarities for the globe created for the Disneyland Resort in California and the Walt Disney World Resort in Florida.

About the book

For awhile now I've wanted to make a point of how difficult it has been deciding on the format of the book I am creating. One of the biggest things is deciding how to classify a snowglobe. Should the categories be based on format (minis, deluxe, domes, bubble, hourglass, etc) or by film/character. The answer turns out to be some of both. For the most part I've decided to lay the book out by film/character/theme park and whenever possible list them in chronological order by the year the globe was first available. Many globes however dont fit in a film/character category very easily. What about the globes that have a lot of different characters? That one was easy, I created a category called group. There will also be sections for Princesses, Villians & the Fab 5. I decided Christmas should have its own category and ended up including any scenes that depicted winter activities even if it wasnt a Christmas globe in an attempt to make it easier to look up globes in the book. And that brings us to the current Bambi globe depicted in the last post. It's a winter scene but really should be in the Bambi section since it is a scene from the movie. I've also listed the hourglass globes all together because of the unusual format of the globe. I am currently wondering if I should do the same for the recent series of cups that have snowdomes built into the bottom and the squishable bubble globes. What do you think?

Mary Poppins Auction Watch

Another one of those valuable Mary Poppins St Paul Cathedral snowglobes has popped up on ebay. It is currently at $405.00. You can see the auction here.

New at WDW - Disney Snowglobe

I do not have a picture of my own to share but here is a link to an ebay auction with a picture of the newest globe at Walt Disney World. Mickey, Donald and Pluto turn Pirate on this $15 globe. It is a deluxe mini with no music or fancy features but incredibly detailed.

disney snowglobes - bubble globe update

I have more information on the squishable bubble globes I mentioned awhile back that are at Wal-Mart. Each one costs $3.95 and there appear to be 15 in all. 5 with Winnie the Pooh characters, 5 Princesses in golden gowns and 5 of the Fab 5.

Disney Snowglobe - PINOCCHIO

I found this Disney snowdome at a local wal-mart. They had several others and I recall seeing Finding nemo, Little Mermaid & Lion King as well as this one. They are made by Postcard Factory. They have glitter and a plug so they can be refilled.

not a snowglobe

It's been awhile since I mentioned anything that wasn't a snowglobe of some sort. I found this that might be of interest. What do you get for the Pooh fan who has everything? Faucet & knobs for the sink or tub? I'd buy them except for one thing. They cost $130. Found on the Home Depot website.

Gemmy.com

I recently discovered Gemmy.com. Gemmy makes a lot of different Disney snowglobes of the inflatable and waterless variety for sale at various retail chains. Their website shows much of what they have to offer but the details are sketchy. For example almost every globe has the same generic description and the information is sometimes downright wrong. What is usefull besides the pictures is that they tell you which globe is available at which retail chain.

New Disney Snowglobes - Happy Holidays

DisneyShopping.com debuted 3 new holiday snowglobes this morning.

Ratatouille

The Ratatouille snowglobe that DisneyShopping.com debuted on their website a few days ago is allready gone from their website. Sold Out? Mistake? Small shipment? I dunno but I would suggest that if you see one in a Disney Store that you grab it.

New Disney Snowglobe - Tinker Bell

The latest in DisneyShopping.com's personalized snowglobe series is Tinker Bell.

Top Ten Update - Song of the South

The Song of the South snowglobe that was previously on the top ten list has reappeared on the list at the #6 spot. It sold for $375.02 and knocked the Chronicles of Narnia snowglobe off the list. A Disney snowglobe now has to sell for at least $312 just to make it onto the list. The current TOP TEn can be seen here.

Mouskavison

Mouskavision is now featuring the Donald Duck cartoon Trick or Treat plus a few other Disney spooks you might find interesting.

Disney Snowglobe - Christmas Pooh

This one is now appearing on DisneyShopping.com but it is a Disney Store globe so most likely is also available in the stores. It's different. I have a feeling I would like it if I saw it in person but its hard to tell by the picture. I find it interesting that it doesn't have more of the characters.

New Disney Snowglobes - Ratatouille

DisneyShopping.com came out with a set of princess snowglobe ornaments today. They are 24.50 for a set of 4. They appear to be of the waterless variety with loose "snow" in the bottom of the ornament.
Also, debuting today is Ratatouille's first deluxe globe. It is 79.50. It has a blower and plays "April in Paris"
Have I mentioned that Ratatouille is a terrific movie? That you should preorder it now for the November 6th release by clicking on this amazon link and getting it for only $15.99? Maybe you should buy 5 or 6 and give them as Christmas gifts! Ok, I'll shut up now.

Disney SNowglobes - now at walmart

While at Walmart today I took a few minutes to stroll through the Christmas decor which is still in the finishing touches of being put up. I found lots of Disney snowglobes.
The 3 Princess globes that I found pics of on ebay are waterless but play music and have a blower. Without water, the snow whips around the globe and looks like a blizzard. They were 9.99 each. They also had 2 stocking hangers. These figurines have a snowglobe on them as well as a picture frame and the hanger can be pushed into the base when not being used. I could only find a picture of the Tinker Bell one, the other has 3 princesses on it all dressed in gold.
They also had a large variety of the squishable bubble globes. Each one is 3.95. They each light up 3 different colors and have a hanger on the top so you can use them as ornaments. The only one I bought today was a Donald bubble globe. I have no idea if all walmarts carry these items or not.
