Nightmare Before Christmas snowglobes

Magikman writes in to provide the following information:

I am a collector of all Disney produced Nightmare Before Christmas snowglobes (none from NECA, etc.). I currently own 45 snowglobes (minis counted individually, bookends count as one). These include items from Disneyland, Disney Store, Disneyshopping.com, Disney Auctions, Disney Store UK, and Disneyland Tokyo. If you are aware of more than 45 NBX snowglobes produced to date, please let me know so that I can follow up and determine the missing item(s).Anyway, I have three snowglobes from Disneyland Tokyo. All three were purchased from the same eBay seller, and occurred in three subsequent years. Each snowglobe ranged from $20-$30 on eBay, with another $30 or so for shipping. I regularly monitor eBay for snowglobes, and have yet to see these relisted after the year of release. The first snowglobe was from 2004 and featured a very basic design: The second snowglobe was from 2005 and was actually much smaller than the prior year's exclusive (hard to photograph). This is the only snowglobe to say "Tokyo Disneyland" on it; the others simply say Disney Store on the bottom: The third (and final?) snowglobe was from 2006 and was clearly the nicest of the three (the design matches a cookie jar released in the US): Here's a pic of all three for scale:
I continue to monitor the same seller, and there have been no Disney snowglobe exclusives listed since the one purchased in 2006. Your site was one of the few online resources I could locate for Disney snowglobes, so it's difficult to know if none were produced, or if the buyer simply lost a Disneyland contact.
Thanks Magik. I've never seen any of these globes before so I'm guessing they are pretty rare.

I'm famous!

Checked some of my blog stats today to find that a number of visitors have been arriving from a blog called The Pixar Blog. As far as I know, this is the first mention I've recieved that I haven't arranged and I think that's pretty exciting.

The Pixar Blog is, of course, all about Pixar and the wonderful things they do. As a Disney fan, you should check it out.

Would You Wiki for me?

http://disneyana.wikidot.com/

I've started a Disneyana Wiki and hope you will want to use it and even possibly contribute to it.

A Wiki is a website where the users can submit and publish information as well as edit the information that is allready present. Wikipedia is probably the best known.

Ever since I started working on my Disney Snowglobe book, I've been hoping that project could be used to springboard into some sort of website that would document different types of Disney collectibles with each item having its own page. I envisioned it working much like Pinpics.com works for pins except it would include everything Disney.

Obvious drawbacks to the idea were I don't know how to create a website and the costs involved for hosting such a site. This wiki seems to be the perfect solution and anyone and everyone can contribute.

There isn't much there yet and it will be slow going as I learn how to use the site and add things. All I've done so far is set the site up and create a few snowglobe pages using information from Disneyshopping.com. So there isn't much to see yet but now is the perfect time to jump in and learn what we can do and how to do it.

I hope the site will eventually grow to a huge size where you can look up every Disney thing you've ever seen.

A few tips for contributing:
  • There is only so much file storage space allowed so when creating a page please post the pictures somewhere else like Flickr or photobucket and link to them. They will still show up on the page being created.
  • Please don't create a page for an item without having a picture for identification purposes.
  • When creating a page for an item please check to see if a page allready exists for it, otherwise your page will just get deleted by me and all your work will be for nothing.
  • You can edit existing pages to add and change what is allready there. I currently have this open to everyone so please be careful your not putting up incorrect info. Comments should be left in the forum discussion for that page not on the page itself. Any malicious activity or inappropriate content will result in me changing the access so nobody but me and trusted volunteers would be able to create and add information. That would slow down the process considerably so please be nice.
  • If you want to help but cant quite figure out how to create pages yourself, use the forum to leave information and myself or other volunteers can create the pages for you.
  • Remember it is for everything Disney not just snowglobes.

This is not the end of the snowglobe book project and hopefully will be a means of me gathering information and usable pictures for it. For now, however, much of my focus will be going into the wiki.

So, any volunteers?

Nightmare Before Christmas Q&A

Carmella writes in:
"Hi, I'm hoping you can assist me. I have two Nightmare before Christmas mini snowglobes. One of Sally and one of Jack, I bought them from the Disney Store while I worked for ABC television here in NYC a while back (at least 5 years ago). The problem, I would like to sell them but have no info on them. The bottoms only has " © Touchstone Pictures"Would you be willing to help me find more info about them as I cannot find anything yet on the internet but new mini globes. Thanks ahead of time! Have a great day!"

Hi Carmella, I hope I can help. You probably mean these two.
These were sold as a set in 2001 for $19.99 in the Disney Catalog but may have been in the Disney Stores as well. Value wise they don't seem to have gained much. I saw a set in 2007 sell for as much as $26 and this year I saw a set go for around $20.
If these are not the correct globes then you probably have a set I'm not familiar with. If that is the case, please leave a comment with your email address so I can contact you and have you send me pictures. Your comment has to be approved by me to be published on the blog so don't worry about exposing your email to the world at large.

TRON 2

In case you missed the news. Disney showed 3 minutes of test footage for Tron 2 during the Race to Witch Mountain preview at the San Diego Comic Convention. Got me to thinking what a Tron snowglobe might look like. I picture a guy in one of those glowing suits surrounded by blue glitter or 2 guys posed to hurtle discs at one another.

Pixar Comic Books - more details

As you can see by this image, Boom Studios will also be producing some Muppet Comics. I've now read some interviews with the folks involved and I feel better about the whole thing. The first release of the Incredibles will be a mini series about Mr Incredible slowly losing his powers and trying to keep that a secret from his family. Sounds like good stuff that isn't aimed just at kids. The other titles announced will be Cars, Finding Nemo, Toy Story & Wall-E. Look for all the series to be about 4 issues long and then collected into a book format.

Boom Studios is hoping this will be the cornerstone of a larger line of kid-friendly comics featuring other characters as well.

Disney makes "explosove" comic book announcement

Disney announced today that Boom Studios will be creating a line of Pixar comic books. First up is the Incredibles. Boom Studios is a pretty small player in the comic book field but they do have some actual talent creating for them.

This announcement took me by surprise. I had expected that the last announced comic book line called Kingdom Comics would be dealing with the pixar characters. It's said that this line will be aimed at children which probably means it wont be all that good. They would be better off concentrating on creating great stories and the line would naturally be for children because of the characters involved. Still its about time someone started using these characters for comics.

Babes in Toyland snowdome

Hank Millett recently sent me this pic of the rare Babes in Toyland snowdome made by Marx. I was aware of its existence but have never been able to find a picture of it. Thanks Hank.

Wall-E Pressed Coins

Wall-E pressed nickels have been spotted at Disneyland. Thanks to the fine folks at parkpennies.com for the info and pics.

Disney Attraction Rumors

The news seems to be coming fast on the rumor mill lately. I mentioned the Little Mermaid ride a while back that should be going into the Magic Kingdom at WDW. Disneyland just announced the return of the Sleeping Beauty castle walkthrough in California (not a rumor). The rumor mill is now generating buzz about a Seven Dwarfs mine coaster as part of a redo for WDW's Magic Kingdom Fantasyland, a Monsters Inc coaster going into the Studios as part of a Pixar area expansion that might inclde a makeover of the Honey I Shrunk the Kids playground and just to add my two cents to the mix.... imagineering has been showing up at the Tomorrowland arcade a lot lately. Once they were measuring the building and I overheard a cast member asking them what they were doing. "Just looking around" was the reply. Yeah right. Everybody just looks around with a tape measure. I've been told unofficially that the arcade will be closing in a couple of years and have heard everything from it being turned into a restaurant to the space mountain exit being reconfigured to dump people out further back in the building instead of dumping them right next to the exit doors to Space Mountain being completely torn down and rebuilt from scratch. The other day I overheard two imagineers talking. I only heard one sentence. It was before opening and the one guy had his arms spread out to indicate the arcade area stating something like it would be this big interactive experience. Hard to tell what's going to happen as plans change and get approved but there is definitely changes in the air.

I Saw It On Ebay - Wall-E

If you've been in any major theatre the last few months, you've probably seen one of these giant cardboard Wall-E displays and wondered where you can get one. This one sold on ebay for $765.
So maybe, you've got the bucks but not the space for something quite so huge. Your in luck! Turns out, Pixar made miniature versions of the same display for executives at Pixar and Disney that stands only about ten inches tall. This one sold on ebay for $535.

Disney's Cheapest Collectable

One of my friends who still works for the company that takes care of the coin presses at Walt Disney World informs me that new coins are finally being installed. Most of the quarter designs are done and Studios should be upgraded any day now. Pictures are from the Contemporary.

Sneak Peek - Wall-E Snowglobe

Coming soon to DisneyShopping.com is this Wall-E snowglobe. I'm afraid I don't like the design very much but maybe it looks better in person. They often do.

Wall-E Gacha Figures

I don't know how many of you are familiar with the Tomy Gacha machines. They are a vending machine that you can get a capsule toy out of. They are very much like a bubble gum machine except they cost a $1 per item and the items are licensed characters merchandise that can be highly collectible. There are two of the machines with a total of 8 selections at Disney-Hollywood Studios and I have seen the machines at malls and shopping centers occasionally. Also in some resorts around town. Orange Lake used to have some but I think they were removed when the resort changed the company that supplies its arcade games.
Anyway I came across these Wall-E figures that should be available shortly and thought I'd give a heads up to anyone collection Wall-E stuff. The bases of the different figures connect as shown in the picture.

Disney Tiny Kingdom Dioramas

DisneyShopping.com has introduced a new line of collectibles called Tiny Kingdom Dioramas. The first three are Alice, Snow White and Mickey Mouse Club. The pictures look nice but keep in mind the actual box is only 2 3/8" high. The price is $59.50.
I've never been able to bring myself to buy tiny items for large prices. I agree that many lines of tiny collectibles look very nice but I just can't justify that much money for something so small.
The description states that the "figurines" are flat enamel and metal. Doesn't that sound like pins without the pin against a background? If anybody gets any of these, I'd love to see your review of them.

Electric Tiki

Electric Tiki has announced a new licensing partership with Disney. Sometime in 2009 they will begin a line of Disney figurines. This teaser image and the information that Darkwing Duck will be the first subject is all that is known so far.

New 2008 Disney Lenox

Here's a few of the new 2008 Dinsey Lenox figurines as seen on their website. I've never been a real big fan of the Lenox items, though I have bought a few of the more elaborate items as gifts for my mom over the last few years. I do like the Snow White pose that is shown here.

Arrrgh! Disney Pirates!

Charles and Bruce Boyer will be at Disneyland on July 17th for the release of this wonderful new painting. The original will be priced at $19,500. $550 will get you a limited edition giclee. $35 grabs you a deluxe print.
I really love this painting. Reminds me of some of the old Dell Giant comic book covers only better.
